Journey of Service and Faith
Since 2024, Alex has been a regular presence at Kate’s Kitchen, faithfully serving during dinner and building meaningful connections with the community. His path to volunteering began during a challenging season of financial hardship. In that struggle, Alex found his faith, describing it as a time of “learning, growing, sanctification, and development.” With this newfound perspective, he realized he needed to serve others.
Alex, who owns property in the area, felt drawn to give back to the very community where he invests his time and resources. Kate’s Kitchen quickly became a natural place to do just that. “I’ve always hated going hungry and hated being cold,” he shared. “So any way I can help somebody with a small blessing to avoid one of those two things, I’m happy to be here.”
When asked what he does at Kate’s, Alex is quick to laugh: “Mostly I do dishes, but truthfully, I eat some of the wonderful food as well.” More than just helping behind the scenes, Alex takes time to sit with guests, share meals, and build friendships. He has even found a church community alongside some of the patrons he first met at Kate’s.
For Alex, the true highlight of volunteering is seeing how his service deepens his faith. “The highlight of the experience is seeing how God connects with me through the service. It has been just as rewarding to be a part of this community and part of the mission, as it is beneficial for the people we help.”
Relationships have been another unexpected gift.
“I love the relationships that I have made. I’ve met some brothers in Christ through it, and it feels good to give back. It’s important to believe and give back to something bigger than yourself. Sometimes we need to have our cages rattled a little bit to put into perspective what is really important in the world.”
When asked why others should consider volunteering, Alex is clear: “To be involved is work spiritually and is good for your mental health, and at the end of the day it is not all about you.”
Alex’s story is a reminder that service is not just about helping others—it transforms the one who serves as well. At Kate’s Kitchen, he has found not only a way to bless others, but also a community and a deeper connection to his faith.
