A Friendly Face at Kate’s Kitchen

For the past eight years, John Barrett has been a familiar and friendly face at Kate’s Kitchen. As a volunteer participant from Sunshine Village, John has made a lasting impact on both the staff and guests who walk through our doors. Along with his fellow volunteers, John dedicates his time every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to helping us carry out our mission of serving nourishing meals to those in need.

John is an invaluable member of the kitchen team. He often helps with prep work, peeling and cutting vegetables, portioning desserts, and assembling trays. He also plays a key role in distributing meals directly to guests—a part of his volunteer work he finds especially meaningful. “My favorite part is serving everybody that is hungry,” John says. “Kate’s is an amazing place, and I know it’s a great service for those who are in need.”

Of course, John also enjoys sampling the food he helps prepare—especially the desserts! His appreciation for the meals reflects the care and effort that goes into every serving at Kate’s.

Outside of volunteering, John has plenty of hobbies that keep him busy. He enjoys going to the movies, visiting the mall, and spending time in parks. He also has a special love for antique stores and flea markets, where he can explore treasures from the past.

Jasmine, Chef at Kate’s Kitchen and our foodWorks Instructor, says John’s contributions make a big difference every day.

“John is amazing, and people enjoy seeing his smiling face when he is serving. His service takes a burden off of my workload, and I appreciate anything and everything he does for us.”

We are so grateful for John’s commitment, kindness, and energy. His steady presence not only helps keep Kate’s Kitchen running smoothly but also brings joy and warmth to everyone he serves. Volunteers like John remind us that a simple act of service can make a powerful impact in the lives of others.
