A Steady Heart in Service

When Nancy first came to volunteer with us, it was out of necessity—a requirement to receive benefits for her family. For two years, she fulfilled that obligation. But when her time on assistance ended, Nancy chose to stay. Not because she had to, but because she wanted to.

Nancy stayed because she liked to keep busy, enjoyed helping her community, and valued the friendships she built here—especially with Brenda, her long-time partner in service. Over the years, Nancy has done just about everything: helping with donations in the clothing store, organizing the thrift shop, stocking shelves, packing pantry bags, and lending a hand wherever it was needed. She never complains—she simply steps in and gets it done.

One of Brenda’s fondest memories is the day Mr. LeBlanc from Dean Tech recognized Nancy’s voice. He had once been her teacher, and the unexpected reunion brought joy to them both. Nancy also loves when her daughter comes to volunteer alongside her. In fact, helping here has become a family affair—her husband and daughter have pitched in at pop-up pantries and other events when extra hands were needed.

Nancy has lived in Holyoke for 44 years and takes great pride in serving the community she calls home. She believes deeply in our mission—providing shelter, food, clothing, and most importantly, compassion. Having once needed assistance herself, Nancy knows the difference it makes to be treated with dignity, and she extends that same respect to everyone she serves.

Brenda sums it up best:
“For many years, it was just me and Nancy. She was the one constant person I could count on. Every day she showed up, she made an impact—not just by what she did, but by the heart she brought with her. Nancy doesn’t get anything in return from us or any other resource. She’s here because she cares about the community, and because we’re friends. I appreciate her more than I can say.”

After a day of volunteering, Nancy feels she’s made a difference in someone’s life. And she has—over and over again.

We’re grateful for Nancy’s dedication, compassion, and friendship. She’s living proof that when we give of ourselves, we make our community stronger.
